In Spring 1941, the Eighth Route Army undertook a mass production movement in Nanniwan, a gorge controlled by the Chinese Communist Party in Shaanxi, in response to the deteriorating relations with the nationalists and economic hardship. Party organizations, military, and schools participated in the production movement, mainly engaging in agricultural production, as well as manufacturing, handicraft, transportation, animal husbandry and commerce industry.
